County Approves Resolution in Support of Proposition 50

The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors voted to support Proposition 50, a state ballot measure aimed at allowing a temporary redraw of California’s congressional district lines through 2030. The resolution passed with four in favor and one abstention, marking local government alignment behind what supporters call a stand against gerrymandering.

Board President David Canepa framed the measure as a defense of democracy and a response to perceived partisan manipulation. The resolution comes amid growing concerns about fair representation in light of similar moves in other states. Read more here.

Council Compromises on Bike Lane

San Mateo's long-planned Delaware Street "Safe Routes to School" bike and pedestrian improvement project is moving forward with a refreshed, community-driven design. The updated plan features a one-mile stretch of a physically separated bikeway, complete with buffered lanes and green bollards, from 19th Avenue toward Pacific Boulevard.

After a final community meeting on September 3, city leaders emphasized how these changes align with the city's 2020 Bicycle Master Plan and the grant-funded Safe Routes to School goals: to boost safe, active transit among families and students. Adjustments were made to balance parking and traffic concerns, highlighting the council’s responsiveness to civic voices and their effort to find middle ground on public projects.

In response to neighborhood feedback, the plan was tweaked so that the southbound vehicle travel lane remains intact, with narrower lanes and eight fewer parking spaces, striking a compromise between cyclist safety and traffic flow. Read more here.

County Releases a Revised $5.5 Billion Budget, Maintaining Critical Services

San Mateo County introduced a $5.5 billion revised budget for fiscal year 2025-26, aiming to preserve essential services despite uncertainties in state and federal funding. The update adds about $610 million in spending and 24 new positions, while continuing support for health clinics, housing aid, and food assistance programs across the region.

The Board of Supervisors is slated to review it on September 23. Although the state hasn’t imposed major cuts yet, the county is gearing up for potential policy shifts that could affect Medi-Cal and CalFresh, among others. With $581.6 million in reserves (nearly 17% of net appropriations), officials say the county remains financially resilient. Read more here.
