$1.75M Federal Boost for San Mateo Public Safety Tech & Childcare

San Mateo has secured $1.75 million in federal funding to upgrade public safety technology and enhance a childcare center’s facilities. The investment will help modernize equipment for first responders, making the city’s emergency response more effective and timely. It also supports renovations at a childcare facility, which could mean safer, more welcoming spaces for young families.

This funding reflects local priorities around community safety and family support, and could ease budget pressures for city leaders. Families and residents can look forward to improved services as these projects move ahead. Read more here.

New Interim San Mateo County Board of Education Superintendent

The San Mateo County Board of Education has appointed Marco Chávez as the new County Superintendent of Schools, stepping into the role following the early retirement of longtime superintendent Nancy Magee, effective February 19, 2026. Chavez, who previously served as Deputy Superintendent, will serve out the remainder of Magee’s term through January 2027, helping ensure continuity for the county’s 23 school districts. Meanwhile, an elected race for superintendent is underway, with voters expected to select a permanent successor later this year—something that could shape local education policy for years to come.
