San Mateo School Debating AI Use for Students
The San Mateo Union High School District is continuing discussions around how artificial intelligence should be used in classrooms, with a district task force examining potential rules and guidance for students and teachers. Officials are looking at issues including academic integrity, responsible AI use, and how emerging technology could support learning without replacing critical thinking skills.
The district’s conversations reflect a growing challenge facing schools across California as tools like ChatGPT become increasingly common among students. Any future policies could directly shape how AI is integrated into coursework, homework, and classroom instruction throughout local high schools. Read more here.
Major Safety Upgrades Completed at Key San Mateo Intersection
San Mateo has officially finished a major redesign of the intersection at Norfolk Street and Fashion Island Boulevard, a corridor long considered hazardous for pedestrians and cyclists. The completed project added protected bike lanes, improved crosswalks, new traffic signals, and upgraded pedestrian pathways to help calm traffic and improve visibility. City officials say the changes are already making the area safer and more accessible for everyone traveling through the busy corridor. Read more here.
San Mateo State of the Economy
Downtown San Mateo continues to see strong momentum, with city leaders and business groups pointing to thriving restaurants, busy pedestrian activity, and growing interest from new businesses. The area’s car-free B Street corridor has become a centerpiece for events, outdoor dining, and community gatherings, helping attract both residents and visitors. Business advocates say foot traffic has increased significantly in recent years as more retailers, restaurants, and entertainment options open downtown. For locals, the continued growth reinforces downtown San Mateo’s reputation as one of the Peninsula’s most active and walkable city centers. Read more here.

Alana’s Cafe Changes Ownership
A longtime downtown favorite is entering a new chapter as Alana's Cafe in downtown Burlingame has officially been sold to new owners, but regulars will still see many familiar faces. The new ownership group plans to retain the cafe’s employees and preserve much of the restaurant’s welcoming neighborhood atmosphere, helping ease concerns about major changes to the beloved breakfast and brunch spot. Located in the heart of downtown Burlingame, the transition reflects the continued strength and appeal of the city’s local dining scene, even as many independent restaurants across the Bay Area face economic pressures. For locals, the continuity means favorite menu items and longtime staff relationships are expected to remain part of the experience. Read more here.
