🗑️ Garbage Strike Reaches Tentative Agreement, Ending 2 Week Strike
A tentative agreement has been reached between the union for sanitation workers and San Mateo County, effectively ending the garbage strike that began across the Bay Area in early July. The walkouts, initially triggered by cost and wage disputes, spread in solidarity with East Coast workers. Service resumed this past weekend, with pickup crews working to clear mounting trash and recycling backlogs.
Local leaders, including San Mateo County Supervisor David Canepa, welcomed the deal and emphasized the need for fair worker pay. Now, the agreement which offers better wages and lower health-care costs, awaits union ratification before becoming final. Read more about the details here.
🎥 New Security Oversight at Local Parks
San Mateo is adding crime-fighting cameras to local parks, expanding a new fleet of mobile surveillance trailers into city parks after a retail-theft pilot at Hillsdale Mall and TJ Maxx proved effective. The police-run units, two solar-powered rigs bought for $115K under a state theft-prevention grant, feed footage to the department’s Real-Time Information Center and are being added to MLK Park and Beresford Park.
Analysts can flag vandalism or after-hours trespassing in seconds. Supporters say the added lenses will deter break-ins and graffiti; privacy critics urge clear policies on data use as more public green space falls under watchful digital guardians. Read more here.
⛺️ Redwood City Adopts Anti-Camping Law After Emotional Debate
Redwood City's council has just approved an ordinance that bans camping on public property, a move the city hopes will help guide people experiencing homelessness toward shelter and services. The vote followed a heartfelt and heated discussion, with some council members and residents raising concerns about criminalizing vulnerable individuals.
City officials emphasized that outreach teams and shelter options will be part of cleanup efforts, along with a plan to store personal belongings for 90 days. The decision reflects the city's effort to balance public safety with compassion for its most at-risk residents. To read more about the decision and implementation, click here.

🍣 Sam’s Legacy Rolls On
Sushi Sam’s, the Peninsula’s 36-year sushi shrine, has resurfaced as Sushi Edomata on 25th Avenue—same Toyosu-market fish, but now a sleek 35-seat counter run by founder Sam Sugiyama’s nephew Koichi Ito (head chef), niece Toko Ito (pastry) and son-in-law Kelvin Ching (manager).
Loyal regulars still queue for omakase (dinner Tue–Sat, lunch Thu–Sat) despite the no-sign, no-parking spot, proving the family’s blend of top-grade sashimi and warm hospitality can thrive well beyond its old 3rd-Avenue digs. Read more here.
🍽️ Colander Kitchens Food Lab to Open with 12 Original Concepts
Sushirrito co-founder Ty Mahler has turned Draper University’s former Three Craft space into Colander Kitchens, a 90-seat “food lab” where lunch-goers order by kiosk and can soon mix dishes from a dozen micro-brands—fresh-milled pasta, French Riviera pizza, Brazilian fried chicken, sushi burritos and more—with a full bar, dinner and weekend hours slated once the lineup rolls out by year’s end. Read more here.

Chill Spot Rendezvous
🍦 Chill Spot Rendezvous has scooped its way into the heart of San Mateo, offering a feel-good vibe and a variety of sweet treats, with over a dozen rotating ice cream flavors, about half of which are dairy-free, plus lumpia, empanadas, and made-to-order smoothies. Their dairy-free ice cream uses coconut or pea proteins for maximum smoothness. The cafe doubles as a community hub with open mics, meditation sessions, karaoke, movie nights, and even laughter yoga.
